Fremont Citizens Stop As

Several citizen groups in Fremont California stopped the Oakland Athletics plans for building a new stadium in the city.

Team owners announced their plans to scrap the stadium today.

Many Fremonters thought the money that the city would contribute could be spent on necessary and better services and things.

The first successful citizens groups to oppose stadiums in their area was in Alexandria Virginia. As described in Capital Sporting Grounds, the residents stopped the Washington Redskins from moving into Potomac Yards in 1992. The Redskins next faced opposition in the District where they needed to complete an environmental impact statement which take months and tend to reveal more issues than environmental impact studies.
